Who we are The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are to: maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it protect the Antarctic environment understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance. The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands. The Polar Medicine Unit (PMU) is part of the People and Culture Branch and provides a comprehensive medical service and practice to Australia's Antarctic Program. This is done by managing the recruitment and training of expedition medical personnel, the provision of medical supplies and 24/7 telemedical support for Antarctic and sub-Antarctic stations, field programs, ships and aircraft; and the medical screening assessment of expedition personnel. The PMU also conducts practical research on human adaptation to extreme Antarctic environments. The PMU provides specialist remote and isolated medical support to a number of related programs including through the Centre for Antarctic Remote and Maritime Medicine and external state and Commonwealth agencies on a regular basis, and has an international profile and reputation for its world leading expertise amongst Antarctic nations. The key duties of the position include The Medical Technical Officer will lead a small team to provide a range of support activities to the Polar Medicine Unit (PMU). These activities include medical supply procurement, medical inventory management, equipment rotations for servicing and maintenance and logistics support and coordination. This position has a range of physical activities and desk-based tasks. Working both independently and under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer, this position will support the Polar Medicine Unit's responsibilities at Head Office, on stations and field locations, on vessels chartered or operated by the AAD and associated agencies, and in support of the AAD's Air and Sea Transport Program. The role is responsible for managing the safe and effective receipt, handling, packing, transfer and distribution of all Polar Medicine Unit (PMU) cargo including for the transfer of cold chain, sensitive, hazardous or dangerous goods in accordance with relevant procedures.
