The Role Based at our Stafford Geochemistry laboratory, the Instrument Technician (Night Shift) ensures spectroscopy instruments are operating at full capacity to deliver accurate, timely results. You’ll be responsible for troubleshooting, routine optimisation, and operation of AAS, ICP-MS, and ICP-OES equipment, as well as preparing calibration solutions and maintaining stock levels. This role is critical in minimising downtime, supporting operational efficiency, and maintaining high-quality standards. The Day to Day Operate, optimise, and troubleshoot spectroscopy instruments (AAS, ICP-MS & ICP-OES) Prepare calibration solutions and client samples for analysis Perform instrument performance tests and maintain accurate documentation Manage consumable stock control and prioritise daily workloads Communicate effectively with staff across multiple shifts to ensure smooth operations Ensure all activities meet ALS Quality Procedures Manual requirements Promote and comply with HSE policies and foster a safety-focused culture The Essentials Degree in Chemistry desirable but not essential Minimum 2 years’ commercial laboratory experience, ideally with spectroscopy instrumentation Knowledge of sample preparation techniques and calibration solution preparation Experience using auto-pipettes and volumetric glassware High attention to detail and strong organisational skills Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications preferred Ability to work permanent night shift Working at ALS The ALS team is a diverse and dedicated community united by our passion to make a difference in the world.
