The key duties of the position include The Role The Naval Nuclear Power Safety Regulator (NNPSR) Policy team is part of Defence Trade, Regulation and Industrial Collaboration Division. The team's mission is to provide policy expertise to support the Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Regulator (the Regulator) in legislation, advice and government processes and be a key contributor to Australia's nuclear submarine capability. We are looking to fill roles with the following functions: As the EL 2 Director you will lead a team responsible for the development and co-design of the legislative/regulatory policies, rules and frameworks. You will translate Government policy intent through the development and ongoing review of regulatory policies, rules and framework, including coordinating the changes to the primary legislation and regulations with Defence Legal, and Office of Parliamentary Counsel. You will lead stakeholder negotiations with the Regulator and other areas across Defence, be able to contribute to the Regulator's planning processes and administrative arrangements, ensuring they align with the Government's policy intent. You will be able to consider changes to the Regulator's legislative and policy settings to ensure they remain fit for purpose. You will lead a team responsible for the provision of policy advice on complex issues related to naval nuclear power safety in consultation with a wide range of stakeholders. You will require an in-depth knowledge of legislative frameworks as well as government decision-making and policy development processes. About our Team The Naval Nuclear Power Safety Policy team sits within Defence Trade, Regulation and Industrial Collaboration Division (DTRIC) in Strategy, Policy and Industry Group. The team is the lead within Defence to support the independent Regulator through Defence and Government processes, while ensuring the regulator retains its independence. Australia's acquisition of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines is historic and transformational. The Pathway announced on 14 March 2023, will deliver Australia a world-class capability that will see our nation become one of only seven countries that operate nuclear-powered submarines. This capability will enhance Australia's capacity to deter conflict and support security, peace and economic prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. As part of the announcement of the Optimal Pathway, the Australian Government established the Australian Naval Nuclear Powered Safety Regulator (ANNPSR), which will have responsibility and accountability for the safety regulation of Australia's nuclear powered submarines and associated facilities. The ANNPSR will report directly to the Minister for Defence, while remaining in the Defence Portfolio.
