About the Role This hands-on position is responsible for maintaining, repairing and servicing a diverse fleet of emergency response vehicles and mobile plant assets. Working across workshop and field environments, the role supports the readiness of critical equipment used in bushfire response, rescue, and mitigation operations. You’ll apply mechanical trade expertise to diagnose faults, perform preventative maintenance, and carry out on-the-spot repairs—ensuring all equipment is safe, functional, and fit for purpose. This role is vital in enabling operational continuity and supporting frontline teams across challenging terrain and emergency conditions. $49.57/hour super 8.5 hours/day, 76 hours/fortnight, 9-day fortnight Leaving away from home and OT might be required (accommodation allowances provided) Contract length: 4 months, potential for extension depending on the project. Key Responsibilities Perform inspections, servicing and repairs on heavy vehicles, fire tankers, 4WDs, trailers, and mobile plant such as bulldozers, graders, and skid steers. Diagnose and troubleshoot faults in diesel engines, hydraulics, electrics, brakes, cooling systems, and transmission systems. Conduct field repairs and remote servicing in support of emergency operations or regional deployments. Undertake structural repairs, welding, and fabrication for vehicle modifications, fire equipment mounting, and minor bodywork. Use diagnostic tools and equipment to evaluate mechanical performance and identify corrective actions. Maintain accurate service records using digital asset management systems to track maintenance history and schedule inspections. Comply with safety standards and perform job hazard assessments in line with WHS and environmental regulations. Manage and monitor workshop inventory , assisting with procurement and ensuring critical parts and consumables are on hand. Mentor apprentices or support personnel , sharing trade knowledge and promoting safe work practices. Contribute to fleet planning by providing input on asset condition, replacement priorities, and equipment suitability. About You Essential: Trade qualification as a Heavy Vehicle Diesel Mechanic or Plant Mechanic (Certificate III or above). Current Medium Rigid (MR) Driver’s Licence; willingness to obtain Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence if required. Demonstrated experience working on diesel-powered heavy vehicles and mobile plant equipment. Skilled in fault diagnosis, mechanical repair, and electrical/hydraulic systems servicing. Competent in welding, fabrication, and use of diagnostic software or tools. Physically fit and able to undertake operational support activities in field conditions. Willingness to undertake bushfire operational training when required. Sound understanding of WHS legislation, risk management and maintenance compliance. Permanent resident or Australian citizen with valid working rights (sponsorship not available). Desirable: Familiarity with government or emergency services fleets and response-readiness standards. Experience with mobile plant used in hazard reduction or construction (e.g. dozers, bobcats, rollers). Working knowledge of asset management software (e.g. SAP, TechOne, or similar systems). Basic computing skills and ability to complete electronic job cards or inspections. Adaptability to travel and work in remote or regional environments as required.
