About the Role Schlam Payload is seeking a proactive and technically strong Manufacturing Engineer to support and improve our heavy fabrication operations at our Forrestfield facility. This newly created position is designed for someone who thrives on problem-solving, process optimisation and delivering not just a quality product but a standout experience for internal teams and our end customers. You’ll bring both strategic thinking and hands-on know-how to drive continuous improvement, eliminate waste and raise the bar on product quality. Reporting to the General Manager – Manufacturing , you’ll work across multiple functions to support the business with high-impact solutions and efficient production methods that enable better performance, reduced costs and exceptional outcomes. What You’ll Be Doing Analysing, establishing and improving manufacturing processes to ensure safe, consistent and specification-compliant output Driving quality assurance and quality control initiatives to deliver a 100% in-specification product Leading lean manufacturing projects that focus on waste reduction and continuous improvement Collaborating with stakeholders across engineering, quality, operations and supply chain to develop and implement practical solutions Providing hands-on technical support in heavy fabrication, with a strong focus on welding, distortion control and process flow Documenting work methods, build plans and tooling methodologies to enhance consistency and traceability Delivering training and coaching across the workforce to build capability and embed best practice standards Working closely with vendors and global teams to share knowledge, optimise methods and apply innovation across production processes About Your Experience To succeed in this role, you’ll be someone who thrives in a fast-paced, practical environment and who brings both technical depth and a customer-first mindset. You will bring: A degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) or equivalent hands-on experience in a similar manufacturing or engineering role Strong experience in heavy fabrication, with a solid understanding of large-scale welded structures, complex assembly processes, and thick plate materials Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and interpreting detailed engineering drawings Proven ability to resolve technical manufacturing problems and implement sustainable improvements A working knowledge of lean manufacturing principles. Formal qualifications are not required but familiarity with concepts such as waste reduction, flow and standardisation is highly valued High-level written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop and document processes and procedures Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with a practical, hands-on approach We value people who are adaptable, solutions-focused and passionate about working with others to build better outcomes for our team, our products and our customers.
