Company Overview The Legal Services Commission (Legal Services) is an independent statutory authority providing legal assistance to all South Australians. As the largest legal assistance service in SA, Legal Services offers a range of services, from legal information and advice to legal representation in the areas of family law, criminal law and civil law. A newly created role, Legal Services is now seeking a Director, Strategy Policy and Planning to join their passionate team and deliver the best possible legal outcomes for all South Australians. Role Overview Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), this role is responsible for leading and managing the Strategy, Policy and Planning Division, with a focus on the areas within the organisation that are responsible for service provision by private practitioners as well as the policy, compliance and complaints handling functions. The Director, Strategy Policy and Planning is part of the executive team tasked to monitor, evaluate and review services to establish the effectiveness and appropriateness of existing policies, programs and practices and to identify areas for improvement. The successful candidate will be a strategic and collaborative leader who can drive the development and delivery of high-quality legal services across Legal Services. In this pivotal role, the Director, Strategy, Policy and Planning will work closely with executive leaders, staff, and in-house legal teams to shape and implement forward-thinking legal service strategies, policies, and plans that ensure equitable, professional, and client-focused outcomes. The Director, Strategy, Policy and Planning will lead the development of evidence-based policies and procedures that guide the provision of legal assistance by both in-house practices and external providers, responding to emerging legal, social, and sector-wide trends. Their expert advice will inform key decisions by the CEO, Commissioners, and senior leadership on legal need, legislative reform, evolving service models, and strategic risks and opportunities. This role is also responsible for overseeing legal practice performance, ensuring compliance with regulatory obligations, and reporting against internal quality and governance standards. Skills, Knowledge and Experience The successful candidate must be admitted or eligible for admission as a practitioner of the Supreme Court of SA and have at least 11 years’ post-admission experience in a relevant legal field. Legal Services is seeking a collaborative and strategic leader with outstanding written and verbal communication skills, who can effectively lead and motivate teams through change and continuous improvement, while building and maintaining productive relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders. Candidates with experience in managing legal representation services, including those provided by external suppliers, as well as sound knowledge of legal professional practice and the judicial system are highly desirable for this role.
