Job Description: Position Title: Advanced Trainee - Intensive Care Medicine Employment Type: Maximum Term Full Time (until 01 February 2026) Hours per week: 38 Position Grade: Registrar Salary: As per the EBA Enterprise Agreement The Named NSW (Non-Declared) Affiliated Health Organisations’ Medical Officer Agreement 2024 Department Name: Intensive Care Unit The Intensive Care Advanced Trainee is responsible for assessment and management of patient’s admitted to the Intensive Care Unit; communication of assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient’s care; communication with the patient / family regarding the patient’s condition and management plans; maintenance of accurate and relevant patient documentation; coordination of diagnostic tests and consultations and arrangement of patient discharge process to wards. The Intensive Care Service at St. Vincent’s Hospital operates as a combined 32 bed facility which includes the general, cardiothoracic, transplant and the Private Hospital Intensive Care Units. There are approximately 2500 admissions through the unit per year with an interesting and challenging specialty casemix. Trainees are rotated through all 3 areas. There is a strong focus on education with regular tutorials and simulation sessions aimed at the Part 1 and 2 of the Fellowship Examination of College of Intensive Care Medicine and the Fellowship Examination of the Faculty of Intensive Care. The posts are accredited for ICU training by the FCICM (C-24), ANZCA and RACP. Key Accountabilities Communicate patient-relevant information in a timely and clear manner to patients and their families/carers and all staff involved in the patient's care, to facilitate shared decision-making and timely information transfer. Ensure accurate documentation in relation to patient care, with confidentiality and privacy, to ensure timely and efficient communication, and that patient records are effective and accurate for current and future use. This includes preparing treatment plans, correspondence with other treating practitioners, entry into medical records, referrals, discharge summaries, reports, certificates and any other documentation in relation to patient care and management. Teach and supervise other clinical staff, to ensure an optimal learning environment, promote growth and development of others, and to develop skills in teaching, enable them to develop the competence and knowledge required for responsible practice, promote team building and a supportive environment, enhance their performance, and monitor their welfare. This includes assisting with formal education sessions, providing learning experiences on the job, case presentations, giving constructive feedback and informal instruction, undertaking formal/informal assessments, checking work is conducted to standards, contributing to professional development, assisting to solve problems, and clinical workload management. Conduct research to contribute to scholarly knowledge that leads to better patient outcomes and to develop skills and understanding of quality research including methods, ethics, managing conflict of interest, obtaining informed consent, recruiting and supervising participants, and understanding scientific principles. Manage and participate in the Department's quality assurance activities to ensure that standards are maintained, gaps in safety and quality standards are identified, and to contribute to the continual improvement of the department and the service provided by the hospital. This includes audit activities, morbidity and mortality meetings, quality improvement programs, peer review, relevant committee participation, root cause analyses, infection control reporting, and complaints investigations. Actively monitor and manage own mental and physical wellbeing, reporting concerns and seeking assistance when needed. Meet College training program requirements, participate in educational experiences, and actively seek to learn and obtain feedback in order to develop and understand your own skills, knowledge and capability; and therefore to exercise judgement and know when to seek assistance. Participation in the after-hours roster for evenings and weekends, as allocated, will be required. Selection Criteria MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category. Evidence of working towards completion of relevant College examinations. Preference will be given to candidates who hold (or are in the process of obtaining) FCICM, FANZCA, FRACP, FRCA, FFARCSI, EDIC or equivalent qualifications. Demonstrated commitment to a career in Critical Care Medicine and a strong interest in research and teaching. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.
