Pathology services are centralised at SVHM, Fitzroy campus, Main Hospital Building (A). POSITION PURPOSE Grade 1 Scientists are responsible for testing in various laboratory sections of the haematology department [Transfusion, Automated and Manual Haematology, Coagulation and Morphology] and are responsible for the processing of specimens according to established laboratory procedures and issuing of results relevant to these specimens. At relevant timepoints scientists are responsible for testing in multiple/all sections of the laboratory. Their goal is to work as part of a team, both in hours and out of hours, to achieve high quality work and produce accurate and timely reports. In addition, Grade 1 Scientists may be responsible for the evaluation and accession of specimens and for day to day equipment maintenance, preparation of reagents, and stocktaking as required. To provide Pathology services with competence and compliance with relevant current Australian Standards, Legislation and following Haematology Department, Pathology and SVHMl policies. Immediate and anticipated needs of patients are to be met effectively and efficiently. The part time [0.63FTE], limited rotation positions cover the below sequence of shifts including participation in the on call roster. Note the rotation is a 3 week rotation in the event of person 4 being on leave. 3. POSITION DUTIES Provides high quality, accurate and timely results receives specimens, checks identity and labels in accordance with CSR protocols and Haematology Department/SVHM policies prioritises work according to clinical urgency and processes accordingly ensures correct interpretation of results from instrumentation and other tests and troubleshoots effectively as necessary performs blood groups and cross-matching in accordance with laboratory protocols records the receipt and issuing of blood components/products in the inventory system undertakes tasks allocated and ensures that outcomes are achieved within specified time frames where rostered, ensures that the Outstanding lists are manually checked at least once per shift Displays personal and organisational skills displays skill in time management displays ability to prioritise work delegates, escalates and seeks support when necessary Displays ability to problem solve trouble shoots to resolution patient and system issues within the Haematology Department reports problems on appropriate forms Participates in equipment maintenance performs regular maintenance checks on analysers as detailed in laboratory procedures. ensures equipment is clean and free from blood spillages takes appropriate action to resolve any equipment malfunctions and records the matter Conducts oneself in a manner that enhances the Service to the customers is familiar with customer/patient service procedures and complies with these requirements investigates/prosecutes customer/patient complaints to resolution, referring matters on where appropriate and ensuring adequate documentation Communicates with other staff on matters relating to the efficient running of the laboratory contributes to weekly housekeeping meetings as participates in Departmental discussions consults with the senior scientists and medical staff on procedural and diagnostic matters Observes and operates within Departmental structure and lines of responsibility Actively participates in appropriate handover procedures Provides support to colleagues arrives on time for specified shift completes work to the best of their ability is aware of changes in workload, through active and ongoing communication with colleagues, and acts to assist in work processing instructs newer/technical staff and trainees in the performance of haematology tests/service Complies with OH&S policy on laboratory dress ensures personal dress is appropriate for rostered duty makes use of safety equipment provided (e.g. gowns, gloves, protective eyewear, etc…) offers suggestions on improving safety in the laboratory Ensures that the Laboratory is maintained in a clean manner maintains a clean work area and removes all unnecessary materials from the
