They are reinventing sport technology, replacing decades of unreliable legacy systems with a seamless, mobile-first digital experience. Now they’re entering a phase of rapid upscaling as they deliver innovative customer experiences, making it easier, faster, safer and more accessible for administrators, volunteers, players and participants to organise and take part in the sports they love. Their apps are currently used by 500k Australian users every week with plans to grow this to 1 million active users by launching four new Sports apps this year. As an engineer @ PlayHQ You'll work across their autonomous cross-functional agile teams, where you’ll be responsible for analysing, building, and regularly deploying software to the PlayHQ platform. Your role will involve contributing to engineering initiatives, communicating effectively with stakeholders both within and outside your team, and driving our collective mission forward. What you bring to the role Cultural chops: You have a growth mindset and prioritise work effectively, contributing to team prioritisation You communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders You contribute to technical planning and breakdown while navigating ambiguity You balance pragmatism with best practices, seeking continuous improvement You align with PlayHQ's values: community first, supporting each other, and ownership Bonus if you love or play sport or involved in it one form or the other Technical chops: You have 3-5 years of experience in a similar role You aspire to be a T-shaped full stack engineer and like dabbling in the FE from time-to-time (experience here would be a bonus, and a willingness to learn if no experience in FE) You have experience in building cloud-native AWS services using TypeScript/Golang You have experience with GraphQL and gRPC, understanding transport layer design to prevent breaking changes You have experience with SQL, NoSQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB or graph DBs like Neo4j You are familiar with event-driven architectures using RabbitMQ, Kafka, SQS or similar technologies You have experience in o11y/logging/monitoring/alerting using tools like Grafana/Sentry/DataDog etc You have experience in building robust backends for mobile apps and have a strong understanding of core backend engineering principles You write clean, testable, and secure code aligned with architectural and security/AuthZ best practices (TDD/BDD experience a bonus You are comfortable making the odd contribution to DevOps/DevEx, e.g. GitHub actions, Docker, Helmcharts/K8s, NPM, ESLint, TSConfig etc. You are familiar with performance testing tools (like k6) and using them to optimise applications Product chops: You put the customer first, and are always asking the WHY You understand the importance of UX and how your technical decisions impact it You collaborate effectively with product managers/designers to clarify requirements and propose technical approaches You contribute meaningfully to product discussions with a balance of technical expertise and user empathy What's in it for you PlayHQ offers a flexible working environment with a great open-plan office in Melbourne CBD, featuring a professional yet relaxed atmosphere.
